Electroslag Welding Fundamentals

Process Characteristics

ESW is a single-pass welding process for vertical joints in heavy plates. The process uses resistive heating in a molten slag pool to melt the electrode and base metal. No arc is present during steady-state welding.

Advantages

  • Single Pass: Any thickness can be welded in one pass
  • High Deposition: 15-35 kg/hr typical, depending on setup
  • Low Distortion: Symmetrical shrinkage minimizes angular distortion
  • No Edge Prep: Square edge joint preparation

Critical Parameters

  • Slag Pool Depth: 35-50mm typical, affects heat distribution
  • Electrode Immersion: Keep consistent for stable process
  • Copper Shoes: Water-cooled, must maintain good contact
  • PWHT: Usually required due to large grain size in HAZ
