Electroslag Welding Calculator
Calculate ESW parameters for single-pass vertical welding of heavy plates.
Electrodes vs Plate Thickness
| Thickness | Electrodes | Gap |
|---|---|---|
| 25-40mm | 1 | 20-25mm |
| 40-80mm | 2 | 25-30mm |
| 80-150mm | 3 | 28-35mm |

Electroslag Welding Fundamentals
Process Characteristics
ESW is a single-pass welding process for vertical joints in heavy plates. The process uses resistive heating in a molten slag pool to melt the electrode and base metal. No arc is present during steady-state welding.
Advantages
- Single Pass: Any thickness can be welded in one pass
- High Deposition: 15-35 kg/hr typical, depending on setup
- Low Distortion: Symmetrical shrinkage minimizes angular distortion
- No Edge Prep: Square edge joint preparation
Critical Parameters
- Slag Pool Depth: 35-50mm typical, affects heat distribution
- Electrode Immersion: Keep consistent for stable process
- Copper Shoes: Water-cooled, must maintain good contact
- PWHT: Usually required due to large grain size in HAZ
