Weld Reinforcement Calculator
Calculate acceptable reinforcement height and profile limits per code.
Groove Weld Reinforcement Limits
| Thickness | ASME/AWS Max | Cyclic Service |
|---|---|---|
| <6mm (1/4") | 2mm (1/16") | Flush |
| 6-13mm (1/4-1/2") | 3mm (1/8") | 1.5mm |
| 13-25mm (1/2-1") | 3mm (1/8") | 1.5mm |
| >25mm (1") | 4mm (5/32") | 2mm |
Weld Profile Requirements
Why Reinforcement Matters
- Stress Concentration: Excessive reinforcement creates stress risers at toes
- Fatigue Life: Smooth profiles improve fatigue performance
- Inspection: Proper profile allows accurate NDE
- Appearance: Uniform reinforcement indicates consistent welding
Fillet Weld Convexity
- AWS D1.1: Max convexity = 0.07 x face width + 1.5mm
- Concavity: Reduces effective throat, may require larger leg size
- Legs Equal: Both legs should be within tolerance of specified size
Corrective Actions
- Excessive: Grind to acceptable height with smooth transition
- Insufficient: Add weld metal to meet minimum
- Undercut: Weld repair with proper fusion
- Overlap: Grind and reweld for proper fusion
